1. Scope

To minimize the incidents and injuries to children resulting from normal use and foreseeable misuse or abuse of these products. In particular, hazards associated with child entrapment and/or suffocation and asphyxiation.

Rationale

Standards currently exist for products broadly defined as "Toy Chests" (ASTM F-963) and "Cedar Chests" (ASTM F2598). It has been noted that CPSC recalls have been issued for a type of product that falls outside the scope and design parameters addressed in these existing Standards. These recalls relate to the risks associated with entrapment leading to suffocation or strangulation.
